• Unit 1 - Introducing the Smart Kids learning The first lesson will provide a preview of the learning module, including the intended learning outcomes and the week-by-week teaching programme. This lesson will also underpin future learning by examining the evolution of the city, from its earliest origins – to the Smart City of today.

  • Unit 2 - The STEM Evolution driving smart cities The second lesson will further explore the concept of Smart Cities and consider high-profile Smart City initiatives across Europe, including those in Amsterdam and Barcelona. The Smart City concept will be contextualised by examining the phenomena of rapid urbanisation and the increasing requirement to find innovate and sustainable solutions to urban problems. Emphasis will be placed on the role of STEM in developing these solutions.

  • Unit 3 - Digital infrastructure + Ubiquitous computing This lesson will introduce pupils to the digital infrastructure that underpins the Smart City, in particular examining the role of the internet in enabling the evolution of the city.

  • Unit 4 - Digital infrastructure + The Internet of Things (IoT) In a continuation from the previous week, this lesson further explores the digital infrastructure of smart cities, introducing the concept of Internet of Things (IoT), applications, positive and negative effects.

  • Unit 5 - Data management + Big data Students play Dobble game and try to order the cards according to pictures. Students brainstorm the ways of arranging things in places like library or a warehouse Students learn about BIG DATA Case study: using Kahoot! students answer the questions and analyse the results using A/B testing model.

  • Unit 6 - Data management + Cloud technology Recap information about BIG DATA Brainstorm what and where is information in the cloud Send some data over the cloud to the teacher

  • Unit 7 - Using renewable energy to power smart cities + smart grids This lesson will introduce the theme of renewable energy and its role within the Smart City. The lesson will also introduce the concept of Smart Grids. In doing so, it will demonstrate the importance of integrating renewable technology into the energy network.

  • Unit 8 - Using renewable energy to power smart cities + combined heat and power Pupils will be presented with an overview of the local municipality’s use of renewable energy.

  • Unit 9 - Smart buildings + reducing energy consumption This lesson will introduce the theme of smart buildings. We will also look at ways to reduce energy consumption in the home.

  • Unit 10 - Smart buildings + water recycling In this lesson pupils will be introduced to the concept of water recycling.

  • Unit 11 - Electric Vehicles This course Unit will introduce learners / participants to the field of Electric Vehicles and their importance in a Smart City.

  • Unit 12 - Bike Sharing Systems This course Unit will introduce learners / participants to the theme of Bike Sharing Systems and their importance in a Smart City.
